CLASS #3 Wet Black Sgraffito Silhouette & Blended Background Tiles – 6”

SKILL LEVEL: Basic knowledge of ceramics is helpful. This class is appropriate for beginners, seasoned professionals who are looking to expand their skills and anyone in between (no drawing experience is necessary).
BASICS: There will be two 6” tile projects started in the class. The wet black sgraffito silhouette tile and a blank tile that we will use to create a light to dark underglaze background blend.

Join Terri Kern for a fun and relaxing Zoom Workshop that explores her personal approach to creating painted narratives on clay using her wet black sgraffito technique. If you like to carve and make marks then this is the technique for you. Participants will also learn how to create a light to dark underglaze background blend. Terri will show a few examples of the wet black sgraffito technique on 3D pieces as well. This 1 ½ hour class has a 15 minute window before and after class for questions and answers. The post class Q & A will be extended if needed to address additional questions.
Students will be required to provide their own underglazes, tools and brushes for the class. They will need 3 underglaze colors: black, light blue and dark blue. (For example: Mayco Fundamentals Jet Black, Jade and King’s Blue) Tools should include a sgraffito tool, pencil and a variety of soft brushes including two larger brushes (¾” – 1”) for blending the underglaze backgrounds.
The session will focus on my wet black sgraffito technique over a bisque tile. You’ll receive a class kit with two 6” bisque tiles. Surface embellishment using underglaze painting techniques on bisque tile. I will use Mayco Fundamentals underglaze for the class as it’s what I use predominantly in my own studio. We will start by painting the blank bisque tile with the light blue underglaze and as that dries, we will start on the wet black sgraffito tile and will continue to work on them simultaneously as they dry. That’s exactly how I work in my own studio…always working on more than one piece at a time. You will be able to finish the tiles in your studio after the class is completed. I will be repeating demonstrations as often as needed and am happy to answer questions that come up as you’re learning the techniques. All of the techniques presented can be applied to low-fire, mid range and high-fire clay.

The class fee is $85 and includes the shipping and handling of your class kit (In the continental United States). I’ll ship your kit to you after you sign up for the class via UPS. I’ll also send you a “Thank You” email which will have a link to the digital class kit which can be downloaded from my website. The day before the class, I’ll send your Zoom invitation. A recording of the class will be available for a 30 day period of time once it’s been edited and uploaded to Vimeo.
