CLASS #2: Sculptural Salt & Pepper Shakers, Sculptural Necklace
WHEN: Sunday, September 26th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm EST
COST: $165. Includes Class Kit and Shipping & Handling (In the continental United States).
SKILL LEVEL: Basic knowledge of ceramics is required. This class is appropriate for beginners, seasoned professionals who are looking to expand their skills and anyone in between.
BASICS: Students will begin a couple of salt and pepper shaker forms from slabs of clay with my favorite triangle shape. They will learn how to create a basic pyramid form, apply appendages of different kinds, make new shapes with their forms and a couple tricks for creating holes for a nicely functional shaker. There will be a brief digital presentation as well and time to make a couple sculptural pendants while the shakers are setting up.
Join Terri Kern for a fun and imaginative 3 hour Zoom Class that explores her personal approach to creating sculptural salt & pepper shakers from slabs of clay. We’ll get started with a brief presentation showing the steps to creating the basic forms before we start making the shakers. While they set up, we’ll have the time to create a couple sculptural pendants and Terri will give a short visual presentation showing different kinds of salt and pepper shaker possibilities. There will be ongoing live demonstrations covering different aspects of creating appendages including heads, feet and tails.
This class is appropriate for adult participants of all ceramic skill levels. I will send out a short pre-recorded video before the class showing how I like to prepare my slabs for hand building.
This class has a 15 minute window before the class for a brief meet and greet and after class for questions and answers. The post class Q & A will be extended if needed to address additional questions.
Subjects touched on will include basic construction techniques including slab, slip and score, coil, pinch, clay compression, handle pulling and relief carving. Each demonstration will be followed by working studio time. We will start a couple pairs of salt & pepper shakers during the class and will work on them simultaneously as they dry. That’s exactly how I work in my own studio…always working on more than one piece at a time. You will be able to finish them in your studio after the class is completed. I will be repeating demonstrations as often as needed and am happy to answer questions that come up as you’re learning the techniques. All of the techniques presented can be applied to low-fire, mid range and high-fire clay. PARTICIPANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIRING THEIR OWN WORK.
