Looking for a creative jump start? Then start small and join me for this fun and interactive Zoom class. We will spend our time learning to create small works of art that you can wear by making and altering jewelry shapes from thin slabs of clay. We’ll start out with basic shapes like squares, rectangles & circles and then experiment to create new shapes, keeping the surfaces smooth so they can be painted with underglazes or the finish of your choice. We will also discuss your design ideas and how they can lead you to create complimentary and contrasting jewelry shapes. I’ll teach you how I bend and cut nichrome wire to create the jewelry hooks that I insert in my clay pieces and share a couple simple jewelry hacks too. The focus will be on pendant, pin and earring shapes.

Participants will receive several video links prior to the class which covers slab creation for jewelry making, design and how it relates to jewelry shapes, combining smooth surfaces with texture, making texture wheels and how I set up my jewelry making space.

  • Participants have the option to sign up for Class 5, Decorative Underglaze Surfaces for Slab Jewelry, or finish their jewelry pieces on their own.
  • This 1 ½ hour class has a 15 minute window before and after class for questions and answers. The post class Q & A can be extended if needed to address additional questions.
  • Participants must supply their own clay, supplies and handbuilding tools.
  • This class includes a digital and physical class kit that will be shipped to you prior to class. Look below to see what is included in the class kit.

What Participants Need To Consider Regarding Clay Choice

*Participants will use their preferred clay.

  • Think about how you want to finish your jewelry. This will help you choose the clay you want to use to create your pieces.
  • If you want to paint your jewelry with underglazes, you can use low or mid range clay. I recommend a lowfire, porcelain or lightly grogged clay.
  • If you want to use oxides followed by a translucent glaze, you should use the clay body that works best with your glazes.

DO NOT do the following steps more than 1 day prior to class. (We don’t want the clay to get dried out.)

When making your slab:

  1. Roll out your slab and remove the canvas texture.
  2. Cover your slab with plastic. The plastic should be in direct contact with your slab.
