THE LAYERED SURFACE SERIES:

Join Terri Kern for a lively Zoom workshop that explores her personal approach to creating visual narratives on clay tiles. This workshop is comprised of a three hour session on Saturday, August 15th from 10 am – 1pm.  I’ll open the Zoom waiting room at 9:30 for a meet & greet and to answer any questions there might be about the workshop. The session will focus on surface embellishment using underglaze painting techniques on bisque tiles.

This hands-on workshop will feature a short visual presentation on the development of Terri’s work, followed by a brief discussion about telling stories with visual elements. There will be multiple live demonstrations on surface decoration and short videos covering aspects of her creative process.  This workshop is appropriate for adult participants of all ceramic skill levels (no drawing experience is necessary).

Subjects touched on will include basic design development, design transfer, underglaze blending techniques, wet sgraffito and controlled-line detail painting. Each demonstration will be followed by working studio time. Three tile projects will be worked on during the three hour session, which will be set just like Terri works in her own studio…always working on more than one piece.

For example, participants will start off the workshop learning how to paint a blended light blue to dark blue background using some of Terri’s “go-to” Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze colors (Tile #1). The underglaze on the blended blue tile will need to dry thoroughly before it can be drawn on. While that tile is drying, participants will start the next project, blended wet color sgraffito on a black tile (Tile #2). While that’s drying, they’ll start on design transfer for the black sgraffito over yellow to orange color field (Tile #3).  Participants will start on each project during the workshop and will be able to finish them in their home studios after the workshop is completed. Terri will be available, via Zoom, throughout the workshop to repeat demonstrations and answer questions. All of the techniques presented can be applied to low-fire and high-fire clay.

  • 2 large brushes RECOMMENDATION: Mayco Oval Glaze CB 434. (I use these to create my blended backgrounds. These brushes last for years so they’re worth the price.)
  • a variety of medium and small soft brushes that come to a point, I buy these at Michael’s. They come in a pack of 8 brushes. Craftsmart brand, Camelon is the name.
  • A fine line detail brush. I like natural bristle
  • Mayco Soft Fan brush CB-618. This brush is great for applying the Mayco brushing glaze.
  • favorite sgraffito tools with both sharp and dull points
  • design ideas or compositions, sized 4” x 4” on tracing paper to be transferred onto (2) bisque tiles. (You’ll get the tracing paper in your workshop kit.)
