Updates from the Studio

I am in the process of finishing the sculptural pieces that I am creating for my Cincinnati Art Ambassador Fellowship. For those of you who would like to see the completed work, I will be exhibiting the finished sculptural pieces, along side my newest carved and hand painted vessels, at Humler and Nolan in downtown Cincinnati.

I hope you can join me when the exhibition opens on Friday, September 6th. (More details to come in August.)

Can’t wait until September to see me ;-)  Come on down and visit me in Studio 511, this Friday (July 26) for Final Friday from 6-10 pm at the Pendleton Art Center. You can view all the pieces in process as well as see the finished sculptures.

art into action logoArt in Action continues to bring people together to experience art in its many forms. You can join us for the July Art in Action this Saturday, July 27 from 11 am to 3 pm at the Pendleton Art Center. You don’t have to be an artist to participate! There are open studios where visitors can view and purchase works of art. There are painting and sculpture demonstrations to enjoy as well as several “hands on” art making opportunities.

Just go to PendletonAIA to check out the schedule.

Final Friday, Poetry Shots, Pots and Lemonade

Terri Kern Pots

I have a lot of events coming up! Join me Friday, May 31 for Final Friday at the Pendleton Art Center from 6-10 pm and on Saturday for Art In Action from 11am-3pm.

These are some of my new pieces. I have been getting in touch with my “inner Shakespeare” and have been writing. I started with a simple, three line verse, haiku, and hope to work my way up to longer poems. I am carving the words and some illustrations onto shot glasses. I am calling this series “Poetry Shots”.

They will be for sale at my next local show, “Pots and Lemonade”. It is on Saturday, June 8th from 10am to 4pm. This a great local show with the ceramic work of five clay artists. Louise Jenks, Brenda Tarbell, Pam Korte, Richard Aerni and myself. The show offers functional, sculptural and decorative clay work in a variety of styles and offers work which fits every budget. The address is 1326 Edwards Rd. Cincinnati, Ohio 45208 and its just a couple blocks from Hyde Park Square.

Behind The Scenes at Terri Kern Studios for Final Friday

Thought I would share a few photos from the February Final Friday at the Pendleton Arts Center. It was a great night and we had quite the crowd come by the studio.  I managed to get a few photos snapped, check them out:

These two twenty-somethings spent a little time getting creative
and learning to use the clay tools.

Here they are posing for a quick photo with their finished books.

Up Close: These are the books they made.

t.kern.bird.sculptureI’m so excited.  This was a piece I made in early January. I have been pondering
the best way to finish it and have  just started to paint it with underglazes.  The bird is
a separate piece that is held in place atop that stack of carved books with a wooden post.
It’s the largest piece I have made in this series so far and I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s finished.

This is a cool shot. It gives you a different perspective on the bird.  I had fun
teaching these two teens how to make clay books in the studio.
Yes. That is a christmas tree in the background.

Creating Mini Works of Art, January Final Friday Fun

Thanks to everyone who was able to come out to the studio in December for Final Friday. Lots of folks stopped by to create books for my new installation project. Here are a few photos:

It was a lot of fun, and as you can see, we hit a wide variety of age groups – ranging from the “under 10 crowd” to people in their 20′s, 30′s and 40′s.  We had a great crowd stop by and participate and at the end of the night, a total of 35 books had been made!

Moving on to January….. I would LOVE to top last month”s results and hope you’ll join me at the studio for January’s Final Friday on January 22 from 6-10 pm. If you can’t make it, we’ll be open and making books the following day from 11 am – 3 pm.
Hope to see you then!

Final Friday, Carnegie Works and a Special Invitation

I hope everyone has been enjoying the Holiday Season!

I hope you can join me at my studio on Final Friday, December 28 from 6 to 10 pm or on Saturday December 9 from 11 am to 3 pm, at the Pendleton Art Center.

For those of you that were unable to see my show at The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center, I will be displaying those new pieces of sculpture in my studio.  There are fourteen pieces in all.  These are the first finished pieces in my new body of work called “Balance” and are part of the pieces that I am creating for my Cincinnati Art Ambassador Fellowship.

On both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, I will be making miniature clay books in my studio.  These books will be used in future pieces.

When my studio was open last month, I had a couple of kids watch me make clay books.  Afterwards, I invited them to make one of their own.  They had a great time and enjoyed the process.  An idea was born as I looked at their finished books….What if I had everyone who visited my studio, over the next six months of my fellowship, make a miniature clay book?  What if I was able to display all those books as part of a larger sculptural piece?  I got excited with all the possibilities of what the piece might look like, and how it might be displayed.

That being the case, I would like to invite you to my studio to make a miniature clay book that will become part of a larger piece of sculpture.  I will have a dedicated work table set up in my studio and anyone who would like to make a book is welcome to do so.  Come by yourself or bring friends and family.  It doesn’t take long…a short book making demo and  about 10 or 20 minutes of your time.   I will provide the clay and tools.

I look forward to seeing you!
