Upcoming Shows – Clay Alliance Spring Pottery Fair

Just a reminder that I’ll be participating in the Clay Alliance’s Spring Pottery Fair on Saturday, May 5. The show takes place at DeSales Corner in East Walnut Hills and there will be more than 60 clay artists set up, selling their works from 11am – 5pm. There will of course be a broad range of styles and several of the artists will also be doing some demonstrations.

If you’ve attended in the past you know that each year the Clay Alliance raffles off a clay piece. The exciting news is that this year the piece they are raffling off is mine, which is pretty flattering.

Here are two photos I snapped of the front and back of the vessel while it was still at my studio (pardon the mess in the second photo….).

It’s called “In the Midst,” and it is a lidded vessel. The piece was thrown on the wheel, altered to create an asymmetrical form and finished with a hand built lid in the shape of a tornado. I used directional carving in to create movement across the surface of the piece. Many layers of underglaze are applied to create the images on the surface and give the feeling of low relief. The image of a dragon is painted on one side and the other side shows a group of trees, surrounded by miniature, floating paintings. The piece is finished with a high gloss glaze which brings out the subtle yet rich color palette.

If you are interested (and it’s for a good cause), raffle tickets can be purchased in advance at Core Clay or at FUNKe Fired Arts. They will of course also be selling tickets the day of the fair. Tickets are 1 for $1 or 6 for $5.

Wow. I sat down today and started going over my schedule for 2012 and it quickly occurred to me that it’s going to be a busy year. I’ll be participating in several local art shows over the course of the next few months as well as exhibiting some of my pieces in two regional art shows.

Shop For Unique Gifts at The Studio Collection Holiday Art Sale

Getting ready to start your Holiday shopping?

Why not start by shopping at this year’s Studio Collection Holiday Art Sale? I’ll be one of 10 female artists participating in the sale which takes place on Saturday, November 19th from 10am – 4pm. It’s hosted at Harmony Lodge and there will be a variety of items to choose from such as functional and decorative ceramics, quilts, dolls, handmade paper and books, baskets, lampwork jewelry, felted and embroidered wall pieces, prints, and organic jams and mustards.

In addition to myself, you’ll find the work of artists Renee Harris, Margaret Rhein, Lisa Inglert, Susan Naylor, Judy Dominic, Mary Mark, Pam Korte, Pat Statzer and Jennifer Gleason.

I’ll have a wide variety of pieces with me, including some of the newer items I have been working on such as the salt and pepper shakers and earrings and pendants, too.

Hyde Park Art Show October 2

The Hyde Park Art Show returns Sunday, October 2 and I hope you will all stop by and see me at booth 10. The Show is one of the largest (if not the largest) one-day art shows Cincinnati and one that I always enjoy being a part of. There will be around 200 exhibitors representing various mediums – painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, jewelry, fiber, crafts, etc.

If you are interested in coming out to see me, the show takes place at Hyde Park Square (Edwards Road and Erie Avenue) and is free to the public.

I’ve been working in the studio quite a bit and look forward to sharing some of my new works with you!

5th Street Gallery Show Announcement: Bridge

Please join me for the opening of my new show, BRIDGE, at the 5th Street Gallery on Friday, February 11 from 6-9 pm. The show runs through March 5th. The 5th Street Gallery is located on the corner of 5th and Race, across the street from Macy’s.

This show features a variety of art forms including drawings, prints, clay board and of course, ceramics.

My work has always documented my personal history, with each piece serving as a commemorative marker. It is also influenced by
subjects as diverse as illuminated manuscripts, poetry, Chinese culture and Frida Kahlo.

To grow as an artist, visual and technical challenges are part of the evolutionary process. To that end, I posed this question: “If my
work is informed by so many sources, why limit it’s creation to only one medium – ceramics?”

In pursuit of this challenge, I’ve begun to use my concepts and experiences as a bridge which connects the varied art forms of
ceramics, drawing, printmaking and clay board together. These pieces reflect the beginnings of this endeavor.

While ceramics will continue to be my focus, I’m really enjoying the challenge of working in these different mediums and will continue to explore them in 2011.

Work carried by the Auctions at Rookwood

I have placed several beautiful pieces at the new location of the Auctions at Rookwood in Tower Place Mall in downtown Cincinnati. There is a vase, lidded vessel and two small icon wall pieces available for purchase. I must admit It’s pretty cool to see my work sitting along side classic Rookwood pieces. If you’re downtown taking in the holiday sales and decorations, make sure to stop by and check them out! They are open from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday.

The Auctions at Rookwood

Riley Humler and Jeff Engle, from The Auctions at Rookwood, visited my studio recently to look at my work. They selected two pieces which will be featured for auction on Sunday, December 5th from 10 am to 3 pm at Tower Place Mall 28, W. 4th Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. The auction, which starts on Saturday, December 4 from 10 am to 3 pm, is divided into three separate categories : Ceramics, Art Glass and Rookwood. My pieces will be featured in the Rookwood section of the auction which takes place on Sunday. These two beautiful pieces are painted in my new color palette and were both created in 2010. An artcle titled “Depth by 1000 Strokes”, written by Gil Stengel, currently appears in the November 2010 issue of Ceramics Monthly. The article, which starts on page 56 and goes through page 59 has some beautiful photos of my work (taken by Jay Bachemin), a technical process tutorial and a really fantastic article by Gil.

Gil was intrigued by my most recent body of work and asked if I’d be interested in him writing an article about the work and my creative process. Of course I said “Yes!”. Gil and I talked for several weeks and from those discussions, his observations and personal experience working in clay, he wrote an eloquent piece about the creative process in general and how it applies to me specifically.

Gil Stengel is a potter, teacher and writer living in Burlington, Kentucky.
